A TERRACOTTA GROUP OF 'NEPTUNE', FRENCH OR ITALIAN, 17TH CENTURY
This depiction of the god Neptune, holding a trident and seated upon a sea horse's head, is a testament to the Mannerist style of the late Renaissance. While the subject matter aligns with classical depictions of the sea god and river deities, the twisted torso and crouched posture recall the work of Michelangelo, particularly his ignudi, as well as that of other Italian artists (such as the drawings of Passerotti or Salviati, as seen in the Louvre Museum, Paris, inv. RF 38407 recto). The musculature, though well-defined, is rendered realistically, aligning with the aesthetic of the late 16th and early 17th centuries, reminiscent of Giambologna's style.
