Francesco Ruschi soll bei Giuseppe Cesari, gen. Cavalier d'Arpino, studiert haben, ebenso bei Francesco Albani und Pietro da Cortona, somit führenden Künstlern ihrer Zeit. Sein Schaffen ist jedoch besonders von Caravaggios Kunst geprägt. Nach seiner Ausbildung folgt er seiner Familie nach Venedig, wo er 1629 heiratet. 1656 übersiedelt er nach Treviso. Ruschis umfangreichstes Werk stellen die Dekorationen der Decke von S. Anna in Venedig dar, entstanden 1639-51. Sie zeigten in 14 Kompartimenten Gleichnisse aus dem Markus-Evangelium, Allegorien und Seligpreisungen.

Francesco Ruschi gehörte zum Kreis jener Künstler, die für die "Accademia degli Incogniti" in Venedig tätig waren. Für seinen engen Freund Giovan Francesco Loredan zeichnete er Frontispize für etliche von dessen Werken. Diese wurden von Giovanni Piccini gestochen. Die "Accademia degli Incogniti" ("Akademie der Unbekannten") war eine gelehrte Gesellschaft freidenkender Intellektueller (ihre Mitglieder waren vorwiegend Adelige), die das kulturelle und auch politische Leben Venedigs Mitte des 17. Jahrhunderts stark beeinflusste. Die Gesellschaft wurde 1630 vom o. g. Giovan Francesco Loredan und Guido Casoni gegründet. Das Emblem der Accademia war das Wappen der Loredan, versehen mit dem Motto "Ex ignoto notus" (i. S. "Aus Unbekanntem bemerkt"). Die Libertinage ihrer Mitglieder wurde der Accademia nicht selten vorgeworfen. Die Accademia arbeitete meist verdeckt, quasi "hinter den Kulissen", man verwendete eine Geheimsprache und publizierte seine Werke häufig anonym. Vor diesem kulturellen Hintergrund erklärt sich auch das Thema des vorliegenden Gemäldes "Erkenne dich selbst".
