Die Aufteilung des väterlichen Vermögens unter den beiden Söhnen und Abschied des Verlorenen Sohnes - Der Verlorene Sohn verprasst seine Habe. Das zweite Gemälde links unten signiert. Öl auf Kupfer. Je 31,5 x 45 cm. Restaurierung. Rahmen. Aus einem ursprünglich wohl aus vier Gemälden bestehenden Zyklus zum Gleichnis vom Verlorenen Sohn (Lukas 15, 11-32). Dieses ist ein häufiges Thema in der Malerei, nur selten enstanden jedoch ganze Zyklen nach dieser biblischen Vorlage. Zusammen mit den Arbeiten seines Kollegen und Freundes Johann Georg Platzer stellen die Gemälde Franz Christoph Jannecks einen sehr speziellen kleinmeisterlichen Zweig der Malerei des Rokoko dar. Die dargestellten Personen in ihren phantasievollen und farbenprächtigen historisierenden Kostümen wirken wie Schauspieler. Die (im Wortsinn) "Inszenierung" von Jannecks Kompositionen ist vom zeitgenössischen Wiener Bühnenbild beeinflusst. Die beiden vorliegenden Gemälde gehörten zum Gründungsbestand des Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Als dieses am 17. Februar 1872 eröffnet wurde, konnte die Festgesellschaft insgesamt 174 Gemälde Alter Meister bewundern. Diese waren im Sommer 1870 in Europa erworben worden, davon alleine 100 Gemälde in Brüssel, die anderen Positionen, darunter die beiden Gemälde Franz Christoph Jannecks, in Paris.
