Schlafende Quellnymphe mit Panflöte
Querovale Komposition. Die als Halbakt geschilderte Nymphe ruht in einer arkadischen, englischen Landschaft vor den Stämmen einiger Laubbäume, den rechten Arm unter den Kopf gelegt, auf einem apricotfarbenem, weiß gefüttertem Chiton, der kunstvoll so drapiert ist, dass er ihre Beine und ihre Scham bedeckt. Zugleich kann hierdurch das Sonnenlicht auf ihren Unterleib scheinen und eine erhabene Wirkung des Aktes entfalten, die dem Betrachter gleichsam als farbig kolorierte Marmorskulptur erscheinen soll. Leighton gehörte zu den bedeutendsten englischen Malern, Illustratoren und Bildhauern des viktorianischen Neoklassizismus. Sein außerordentliches künstlerisches Talent zeigte sich bereits in seiner Kindheit und Jugend, so dass er mit Unterstützung seiner vermögenden Familie auf dem Kontinent in Florenz bei Giuseppe Bezzuoli und bei Eduard Jakob von Steinle am Städelschen Kunstinstitut in Frankfurt am Main studieren konnte. Beeinflusst wurde Leighton in jenen Jahren von den Nazarenern und der italienischen Renaissance. 1852/53 begann er seine Arbeit am monumentalen Gemälde "Cimabue's Celebrated Madonna", das er 1855 vollendete und mit triumphalen Erfolg in der Royal Academy ausstellte (es wurde noch am Eröffnungstag von Königin Victoria erworben und befindet sich heute in der National Gallery). 1855-1858 lebte er in Paris, wo er berühmte Künstler wie Ingres und Delacroix kennenlernte. 1859 ging Leighton nach London, wo er sich den Präraffaeliten. Dort schloss er sich dem Kreis um Dante Gabriel Rosetti an, ohne jedoch ein reguläres Mitglied der Bruderschaft zu sein. Deren Einfluss ist jedoch seitdem in seinem Oeuvre bis zum Lebensende deutlich sichtbar, wie auch bei dem wohl um 1860 entstandenen, vorliegenden Gemälde. Es zeigt in Sujet, Kolorit und Komposition evidente Parallelen zur Tondokomposition Leightons "Acme und Septimus" (vor 1868) im Ashmoleum-Museum in Oxford. Als hoch geachteter Maler wurde Leighton 1878 zum Präsident der Royal Academy und blieb es bis 1896. 1878 erhob ihn Königin Victoria als Knight Bachelor in den Ritterstand, 1886 erhielt er die erbliche Würde eines Baronets und ein Tag vor seinem Tod 1896 noch die Ernennung zum Baron.
