Hinterhalt bei der Hirschjagd
Äußerst dynamische, lebendige Schilderung einer höfischen Jagdgesellschaft, die auf einer Waldlichtung in einen Hinterhalt gerät. Während eine Edelfrau auf ihrem Pferd von einem Leibwächter abgeschirmt, leicht abseits des Kampfgeschehens in Sicherheit gebracht wird, versuchen die Männer der höfischen Garde links außen die Situation in den Griff zu bekommen, während hinter dem Zentrum der Szene ein unübersichtlicher Tumult mit zahlreichen Soldaten und Pferden tobt. Hinter der großen Eiche rechts scheinen die Jäger den Überfall noch gar nicht bemerkt zu haben, denn sie sind weiterhin vollends damit beschäftigt, einen Hirsch, den sie mit Hilfe der Hunde in den vorüberfließenden Fluss getrieben haben, zu erlegen. In äußerster Detailtreue und Lebendigkeit, in von leuchtend bis abgedämpft meisterlich nuanciertem Kolorit und spannungsreicher Komposition ausgeführtes Blatt, das evidente Parallelen zu den Arbeiten Friedrich Brentels aufweist, der ab 1587 in Straßburg ansässig war. Seine Ausbildung erhielt er zunächst bei seinem Vater, dem Miniatur- und Wappenmaler Georg Brentel d. Ä., und bildete sich in den Niederlanden weiter. Anschließend unterhielt er als Radierer, Kupferstecher, Zeichner und (Miniatur-)Maler eine der bekanntesten Straßburger Werkstätten Anfang des 17. Jhs., in der zahlreiche bedeutende Künstler wie u.a. Matthäus Merian und Tobias Franckenberger ausgebildet wurden. Brentels Werke erfreuten sich unter Sammlern hoher Beliebtheit, es folgten zahlreiche bedeutende Aufträge für den Adel. Dennoch sind nur einige wenige Werke Brentels in die heutige Zeit überliefert, was wohl vornehmlich dem Brand der Straßburger Bibliothek 1870 geschuldet ist. Gouache/Papier, kaschiert auf Holztafel.
