In the years following his training at the Düsseldorf Academy and before turning his attention to pure landscape motifs of the Eifel region, Fritz von Wille still incorporated many narrative and genre elements into his landscape paintings. He travelled extensively through various regions of Germany, which inspired the themes of his paintings, as can be seen in the motif of the 'Bonifatius Oak' shown here. According to legend, Boniface, Bishop of Mainz and missionary for the Christianisation of Germania in the 8th century, felled an oak tree in Fritzlar, Hesse, which was revered as an important pagan sanctuary. In doing so, he wanted to prove to the Chatti people the powerlessness of the pagan gods and convert them to Christianity.
