Giovanni Vincenzo PETRINI (1725-1814). Gabinetto mineralogico del Collegio Nazareno descritto secondo i caratteri esterni e distribuito a norma de' principi constitutivi. Rome: Pressi i Lazzarini, 1791-1792.

Fresh and unpressed first edition of the catalogue of the mineralogical museum in the Collegeo Nazareno in Rome. "The preliminaries of the first volume provide some history of the formation of the collection and a synopsis of the new chemistry of Lavoisier. The catalog then commences, classifying the specimens into a standard structure of salts, earths, bitumens and flammable bodies, and metals. Volcanic objects and fossils are given their own classifications and are treated at the end of volume two" (Schuh). The author, the appropriately named Father Petrini, was the founder of the collection along with Scipione Breislak, one of the founds of Italian Vulcanology. Ward and Carozzi 1754. See Curtis Schuh, Biobibliography of Mineralogy online.

Two volumes, octavo (218 x 145mm). Errata leaf at end of vol 1 (light foxing, a little dampstaining at front of vol 2, some leaves toned). Contemporary Italian decorated wrappers in different patterns, one vol with title in ink on spine and other with printed label, a few gatherings unopened (a few corners smushed). Provenance: "C. Guicciardi" (early ownership inscription in both volumes).
