A good copy in fine contemporary red morocco of the second edition of the most famous and courageous work by Galileo which earned him the condemnation of the Holy Office for his theses against the immobility of the Earth. The work was indexed in 1633 and this second edition was printed clandestinely. The volume is complete with the second part, introduced by its own title page and containing the Letter to the Grand Duchess of Tuscany.
4to (226 x 160mm). Title of first part printed in red and black with engraved emblem of the Crusca, numerous geometric and astronomical illustrations, woodcut initials (light foxing and browning). Contemporary red morocco decorated in gilt on covers and spine (minimal worming and rubbing). Provenance: Mediolanum (bookseller's ticket).
