Die Frage, ob es sich bei Raffaello de' Carli nicht doch um einen anderen Maler handelt, ist nicht endgültig geklärt. Raffaello war Gehilfe des Filippino Lippi, mit dem er auch in Rom zusammenarbeitete. Sein Werk ist toskanisch und umbrisch (peruginesk in den Madonnen) geprägt. Einflüsse zeigen sich auch von Piero di Cosimo und Lorenzo di Credi.
