Maximilian Fretter-Pico (1892 - 1984) was an officer cadet in 1910, promoted to Regimentsadjutant when war broke out, then to commander of the balloon defence artillery unit in 1915, Hauptmann in 1918, Major in 1932, Oberstleutnant of the High Command in 1935, Oberst in 1937, Generalmajor and commander of the 97th Light Infantry Division in 1941. When the industrial city of Stalino was captured on 16 October 1941, he collaborated closely and successfully as comrades with the Italian 63rd CCNN Legion "Tagliamento". He was most likely presented this sword in remembrance of the hard-won, victorious battles they fought side by side. Awarded the Knight's Cross on 27 December 1941, commander of the XXXth Army Corps. In 1942, he was promoted to Generalleutnant and shortly after to General der Artillerie. Released from an American POW camp in 1947.
