Generalmajor Karl von Schoch (1863 - 1940) – a Knight's Cross of the Military Order of Max Joseph
Gold, enamel, engraved "7" on the inside of the suspension ring. On the original, 35 mm ribbon (slightly darkened). The medallions somewhat crooked, occasional hairline cracks in the white enamel and the lower cross arm chipped in one place. Signs of age and wear. Width 29.8 mm, weight without ribbon approx. 8 g. Extremely rare find.
Schoch was promoted to Generalmajor on 7 January 1914 and fought in World War I as commander of the 4th Infantry Brigade from August 1914. On 26 August 1914, he was awarded the highest Bavarian military honour, the Military Order of Max Joseph, for supporting a Prussian division at the Western Front. As this distinction was coupled with elevation to knighthood, he bore the title Ritter von Schoch from 1 February 1915.
In Baptist Schrettinger, Der Königlich Bayerische Militär-Max-Joseph-Orden und seine Mitglieder, Vol. 2, Karl von Schoch is listed as no. 207 in the appendix of World War I awardees. Responding to the plea for help sent out by the commander of the 65th Prussian Infantry Brigade on 26 August 1914, Schoch deployed all available troops and led a successful attack.
Provenance: Consigned directly from the family estate.
