GFM Erwin Rommel - three photograph albums and a folder with over 650 pictures from North Africa, the Atlantic Wall, after his injury and of his funeral
Photographs of various sizes not in chronological order, glued into the albums and on album pages in the folder in photo corners. Among them a few reprints and pictures from press releases. One album partly captioned with pencil. North Africa: roughly 160 photographs, Rommel at inspections, with Africa fighters, numerous pictures of him wearing his dust goggles on his visor cap, at captured vehicles, also views of gun emplacements, desert cemetery, distribution of mail, ship convoy, unloading a half-track vehicle off a ship, camp life, Italian officers, explosions of grenades, reconnaissance vehicles and tanks, natives, camel caravans and antique sites.
Atlantic Wall and presumably also Italy: approximately 450 photographs, numerous views of the various defensive actions against mines through "Rommel’s asparagus", (tr.) "stone heaps against airborne landing", a number of pictures of Rommel at inspections, meetings, among them Admiral Ruge, his chief-of-staff General Hans Speidel and other officers of his staff, and much more. Injury and funeral: ten portrait photographs of Rommel are followed by two portraits after being wounded on 17 July 1944, a still life with two general's visor caps and two interim marshal batons as well as four pictures of Rommel lying in state, one of the funeral procession and a later colour photograph of his grave. Among them also a photograph of General Speidel with signed dedication to Rommel’s aide-de-camp Hellmuth Lang on the obverse and stamp of David Irving (who used this picture in his biography of Rommel).
Unique collection documenting Rommel’s career from "Desert Fox" and hero in North Africa to the forced suicide of the general field marshal who had fallen into disgrace. At least a part, if not all, photographs probably come from the estate of Rommel’s adjutant Hellmuth Lang, as also evidenced by Rommel’s obituary dated 14 October 1944 and the accompanying envelope, addressed to "Frau Maria Lang - Schw. Gmünd".
