Öl auf Leinwand 50,5 x 67 cm. Doubliert. Restaurierung Rahmen. Der Maler und Freskant Giovanni Ghisolfi kam 1650 nach Rom, wo er - zusammen mit seinem Freund Antonio Rusca - das Atelier Salvator Rosas aufsuchte. Der Einfluss der Kunst Rosas ist in der Folge bei vielen Werken Ghisolfis festzustellen, auch die Figurenstaffage des vorliegenden Gemäldes erinnert an das große Vorbild. Zum Vergleich kann hier Ghisolfis "Die Ruinen von Karthago" (Dresden, Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister, Gal.-Nr. 471) herangezogen werden. Dessen Figurenstaffage soll von Salvator Rosa stammen. Die Gestalt des auf vorliegendem Gemälde rechts unten liegenden jungen Mannes findet sich in nahezu identischer Körperhaltung auf dem Dresdener Gemälde wieder. In Rom zeichnete Ghisolfi antike Architekturen und ihre Fragmente und entwickelte daraus eine sehr eigene Art der "Ruinenmalerei". Diese Ruinen-Kompositionen gelten heute als wichtige Vorläufer der Malerei des Giovanni Paolo Pannini. Schon bald erwachte reges Interesse der Sammler an diesen Capricci, die sich durch große Kreativität im phantasievollen Arrangement der archäologisch-bruchstückhaften Szenarien auszeichnen. Dies erklärt wohl auch die spiegelbildliche Darstellung der berühmten Skulptur des Herkules Farnese am rechten Bildrand, womit die Komposition in idealer Weise abgeschlossen werden kann. Vgl.
