Terrakotta-Tondo. Reliefplastische Darstellung der auf Wolken sitzenden Maria mit einem Buch über der Schlange und Mondsichel. Christus, in bedingungsloser Liebe an seine Mutter gedrängt, mit der linken Hand ihren Schleier fassend. In der dynamisch bewegten, lebendigen Schilderung des Kindes und des subtilen Ausdrucks von der Innerlichkeit Mariens, künstlerisch herausragendes Werk aus dem Umkreis des auf Terrakottaplastiken spezialisierten, bedeutenden italienischen Rokoko-Bildhauers Giuseppe Maria Mazza. Als einer der führenden Bildhauer seiner Zeit in Bologna, studierte er bei Lorenzo Pasinelli und Carlo Cignani und schuf neben vielen Reliefs für Kirchenausstattungen, auch viele Skulpturen für den Fürst Johann Adam Andreas von Liechtenstein. Seine Werke finden sich in den großen Museen unserer Zeit, u.a. in den Staatlichen Museen zu Berlin, im Bayerischen Nationalmuseum, München, im Los Angeles County Museum of Art und im Portland Art Museum. Letzteres besitzt unter der Inv.-Nr. 81.103.1 ein ähnliches Terrakotta-Tondo von Mazza, Maria mit Jesus und Johannes. Minim. best., rest.; 40 cm x 32,5 cm. Bronze-Rahmen versilbert.
