Anton Kothgasser (1769-1851) also originally worked as a porcelain painter and had been employed at the Imperial Porcelain Manufactory in his hometown of Vienna since 1784. In 1811, Gottlob Samuel Mohn moved to the imperial city to study at the Academy of Fine Arts. He also worked on the advancement of transparent enamel colors and was probably in contact with the Viennese manufactory in an advisory role. It can therefore be assumed that Mohn and Kothgasser met in this context.
To earn a living, Mohn continued to paint glasses, which soon enjoyed great popularity in Vienna. Kothgasser, who recognized the potential of this line of business, also began to work with transparent enamel on glass as a sideline, which was later to become his main field of work.
The commission lists of some Viennese dealers only suggest how extremely productive Anton Kothgasser must have been. The artist, who never ran a workshop or a sales outlet of his own, was sometimes assisted by other painters. Otherwise he would probably not have been able to meet the demand for the popular small works of art. Kothgasser, whose glass is still highly valued by collectors today, is considered one of the most important glass painters of his time.
