GLASS VASE WITH WATER LILIES USING MARQUETRY-SUR-VERRE TECHNIQUE.

Date: Ca. 1898/1900.
Technique: Thick-walled, multiply overlaid acromatic glass with colourful inlays and overlays.
Description: Glass with a slight brownish tint at the top, with craquelure and patina consisting of
fine-grained, diagonally distorted white stripes interspersed with a few air bubbles. In
the lower part, a purple, diagonally drawn overlay with horizontal, wave-like thread
inlays. Colourful flowers and buds of a water lily incorporated in marquetry-sur-verre.
Individual leaves and flowers with raised cut.
Measurement: Height 9 cm, Ø body 13 cm, Ø opening 9.5cm.
Mark: On the wall inscr. 'Gallé' (cut with the remains of the gilding).


The diverse combination of innovative, labour-intensive and time-consuming techniques,
executed with extremely fine craftsmanship (e.g. patinage, marquetry), creates an
astonishing decorative effect that is both visual and tactile. The glass objects created
using the marquetry-sur-verre technique are an integral part of important private and
museum collections. A vase similar in shape and decoration comes from the former
collection of Jean-Baptiste Eugène Corbin and is now kept at the Musée de l'École de Nancy.
