First edition in German. ‘The first use of the copper plate in connection with blocks engraved with chiaroscuro printing and also the first appearance in any form of the chiaroscuro as book illustration’ (Rudolph Ruzicka, cit. Updike I p. 27). The blocks are said to have been cut by Josse Gietleughen of Courtrai. The first edition was published in Spanish in 1550; the Italian, German and Latin translations followed in 1557. Of the intended 149 medallions only 133 were completed in the Latin, German and Italian editions, and the woodcut outlines are left blank for the unfinished cuts. The colours vary slightly between the different editions with various modifications to adjust the definition. This copy was previously owned by Freiherr von Pichelstorff. In 1726 he built a fine castle, which is still standing, on his baronial domain of Dross in the vast forest expanse called Waldviertel, Lower Austria. There he kept a considerable library of 17th- and early 18th-century illustrated books relating to festivals, architecture and history. See Nancy Bialler Chiaroscuro Woodcuts. Folio (305 x 221mm). Elaborate woodcut title border in black, tan and green, 133 large chiaroscuro portrait medallions in one or two tones of ochre and brown, 16 empty woodcut roundel frames for never-completed portraits (printed numerals in right hand margin of a1v, a6r, b1r and b6r effaced in ink). 17th-century German sprinkled calf, spine gilt, arms of Johann Georg Freiherr von Pichelstorff und Altenburg gilt at centres (upper joint a little cracked, some minor rubbing, one corner restored).
