Am 22. Mai 1882 wurde der Gotthardt-Eisenbahntunnel eröffnet. Als Meisterwerk der Ingenieurkunst euphorisierte das Jahrhundert-Bauwerk die Menschen - manche gar so nachhaltig, dass sie ihre Kinder nach der 15 Kilometer langen Röhre benannten. So erging es auch Gottardo Segantini, der am 25. Mai 1882 - drei Tage nach der Eröffnung des Tunnels - in Pusiano, ca. 15 Kilometer östlich von Como gelegen, das Licht der Welt erblickte. Das passte irgendwie, denn Vater Giovanni Segantini zeigte sich nicht nur hinsichtlich der Namensgebung seines Erstgeborenen kreativ, sondern auch beim Bespielen von Leinwänden. Früh begann der Mann mit der Freiluftmalerei, bis er als weltberühmter Meister der Hochgebirgslandschaft seinen Platz in der Kunstgeschichte fand. Seine künstlerische Ausbildung erhielt Gottardo von seinem Vater und als Akademieschüler in Mailand. Überdies erlernte er am Polytechnikum Zürich das Handwerk der Radierung von Hermann Gattiker. Und auch bei der Kunst des Radierens wählte Gottardo bewusst den Bezug zum Vater. So entstanden neben eigenständigen Werken mit religiösen oder symbolistischen Motiven auch Reproduktionen nach Gemälden seines Vaters. Im Laufe der Jahrzehnte schuf Gottardo Segantini ein immenses OEuvre an Ölbildern, die sich heute größtenteils in Privatbesitz befinden. Die Werke zeigen, dass der Sohn stilistisch wesentlich durch das Schaffen des Vaters geprägt wurde. Kein Wunder, denn beide einte die tief empfundene Liebe zur Natur und die Verbundenheit mit dem Engadin, dessen Landschaften sie in zahlreichen Gemälden festhielten. Inspiration lieferte Gottardo, der das einfach Leben eines Bergbauern führte, schon die unmittelbare Umgebung mit den schroffen Gebirgslandschaften rund um den Silsersee, wo die Familie Segantini im italienisch-schweizerischen Örtchen Maloja lebte. Hier entstehen in der divisionistischen Malweise seines Vaters mit Farbpunkten wie bei Georges Seurat oder Paul Signac und kurzen, feinen Pinselstrichen frische Frühlingsbilder, gelb leuchtende Herbstbilder und tief verschneite Winterlandschaften. Und das kommt beim Publikum an. Gottardo Segantini betätigte sich auch als Kunstschriftsteller und verfasste unter anderem eine Biographie seines Vaters, für dessen Kunst er sich bis ins hohe Alter einsetzte. Werke von Gottardo Segantini befinden sich unter anderem im Londoner British Museum, in der Graphischen Sammlung der ETH Zürich, im Bündner Kunstmuseum in Chur, im Atelier Segantini in Maloja- und im Hotel Schweizerhof in St. Moritz, wo Gottardo Segantini 1904 die Decke des Speisesaals mit einem Birkenhain bemalte - das Hotelrestaurant ist übrigens nach dem Künstler benannt.
