A bifolium from Registrum Epistolarum, in Latin, manuscript on vellum [Italy, c.1100].
A handsome witness to the letters of St Gregory the Great, written in a highly legible elegant Caroline minuscule with the letters well-spaced and well-formed.
c.290 x 405mm (the bifolium), 30 lines in a handsome Caroline minuscule, the text of the bifolium continuous and comprising Gregory's Epistolae 1-5, beginning in Book I, Ep.1.3, addressing all the bishops in Sicily: ‘[...] provinciam Siciliam vices nostras deo auxiliante’ and ending in Ep.5.28 (his epistle to Theoctista): ‘elevatur, nam cum in hac vita gloriam percipit quam [...]’ (some fading of text on outer leaves, repairs to wormholes, remains of adhesive from use as a binding fragment).
Provenance:
Colker MS 287; acquired in 1980 from Maggs.
Apparently from an unfinished copy, with blank spaces for rubrics and coloured initials.
