GREW, Nehemiah (1641-1712) - Musaeum Regalis Societatis, or a Catalogue & Description of the Natural and Artificial rarities. London: W. Rawling, 1681. The catalogue of the museum of the Royal Society, then housed at Gresham College, compiled by Nehemiah Grew whilst secretary of the Society. "Published with the catalogue is Grew's study of stomach organs, which is the first zoological book to have the term "comparative anatomy" on the title page, and also the first attempt to deal with the system of organs by the comparative method" (Garrison-Morton). 2 parts in one volume, folio (320 x 196mm). Engraved portrait and 31 numbered plates of which one folding (some light spotting and browning, few scattered stains). Speckled calf, marbled edges (joints splitting, some rubbings, corners bumped). Provenance: several corrections in the text.
