In the Park of the Villa d'este in Rome. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated lower right: Th. Grudge Df/1900.

Private Collection Southern Germany.

A late afternoon in the Park of the Villa d'este in Tivoli, near Rome. The low sun shines orange-hot on the wide path, the facade of the Palace, and the thin veil of Clouds in the sky. The great heat of the day is over. Walkers, families with children, perhaps tourists, strolling through the Park, meet in front of the backdrop of the world famous Renaissance system.
A scene that would appear with a modified wardrobe and the Staffage figures, so very different today than in the painting of Theodor Groll 1900 painted and very similar to his famous colleague, Carl Blechen 70 years earlier has been detained. An "icon" of the Italy-motives.
Theodor Groll, 1857 born in Düsseldorf, had finished at the Berlin Bauakademie on the training to be a government Builder, then turned to but of the painting and has a private Scheuren students of the düsseldorf landscape painter, Caspar. In addition to several study trips to Italy, he must have established itself quickly in the home as a artist. He was represented with his paintings on several occasions in the düsseldorf art exhibition, as well as in the Large Berlin art exhibition, became a member and later Chairman of the düsseldorf Malkastens and the Association of düsseldorf artists. In 1892, Theodor was appointed to the resentment of the judges at the world exhibition in Chicago, and remained for three years in North America.
With Albert Flamm and Achenbach Theodor belonged to resentment, to the great Italy-painters of the later düsseldorf school of painting. His first training following his interest was, however, more urban and architectural motifs as pure landscapes.
Also in "the Park of the Villa d'Este" seem to be built to the geometric elements of a classic: the circle segments of the however, the dry water basin in the foreground, the mighty, from the top edge of the image cropped, vertical cypress columns in the middle and the horizontal Gradation of terraces, and villas architecture in the Background. These structural elements shape the image much more than the restrained colouring.
