A LARGE TRIPLE CASE POCKET WATCH FOR THE OTTOMAN MARKET - London, Edward Prior (1812-1868) - Case and first outer case silver (London hallmarks for 1868). Two silver-plated outer cases, one with Arabic ornaments the other with tortoiseshell. Fire-gilt movement with verge escapement, chain and fusee as well as a finely àjour-sawn verge bridge, key winder, marked Edw. Prior London 77424. Enamel dial with Arabic inscriptions and signature: Edward Prior London, Weight 229,9g. Movement not checked. - Siegfried Claßen Collection, Cologne. Edward Prior was one of the most important watchmakers in England, producing pocket watches for the Ottoman market. Typical of Prior's clocks were the multiple, mostly triple or even quadruple transport cases, some of which were decorated with Ottoman ornamentation, some with tortoiseshell. Lit. Loomes p. 630.
