A LARGE AND RARE ICON SHOWING THE MOTHER OF GOD OF LYDDA OR 'THE ROMAN' Russian, mid 18th century Tempera on wood panel, laid down on a wood panel. Their expressive faces delicately executed with soft earthly tones, their garments rendered in deep colours, highlighted with dense chrysography, the maphorion of the Mother with an elaborate hem imitating embroidered foliate and stylised designs, and a gold band with simulated pearls and precious stones. Partially restored. 42.4 x 35.4 cm.

Die ausdrucksvollen Gesichter sind fein ausgearbeitet in weichen, erdigen Tönen, ihre Gewänder sind in dunklen Farben gehalten, hervorgehoben durch dichte Chrysographie. Das Maphorion der Gottesmutter ist mit einem aufwändigen Saum versehen, der gestickte Blattmotive und stilisierte Muster imitiert, sowie einer goldenen Bordüre mit simulierten Perlen und Edelsteinen.
