Khmer. Angkor Wat Period. 12. Century

Sand stone. The wide-open mouth with bared teeth is surrounded by three edges, which might represent the curled mucosa. The nose is scenting the air dilated, the eyes menacingly ripped open and the ears louse positioned accordingly. The chest and the back of the head with dense, small, flame-shaped ringlets covered. The back side with a ridge design.

Figures such an attack-ready lions were placed in pairs in front of temples and palaces, mischief repel. Height 40cm, width 28.5 cm, depth 27cm. Condition B. side dish: On a Base.
