Lot 372 | IOANNIS, ALSO KNOWN AS JOHANNES OR GIOVANNI PERMENIATES
IOANNIS, ALSO KNOWN AS JOHANNES OR GIOVANNI PERMENIATES Circa 1501 active in Venice and Crete - Circa 1550 A LARGE ICON OF THE MOTHER OF GOD FLANKED BY SAINTS SEBASTIAN AND ROCHUS Venice, around 1523 Tempera on cradled wood panel. The haloes with punched patterns, against a brilliant gold background. Horizontal cracks with minor substance loss, partially restored. 54 x 75 cm. This exceptional work is attributed to the Cretan painter Ioannis Permeniates, who was active in Venice in the early 16th century. The painting depicts the Madonna with the Christ Child, flanked by Saints Sebastian and Rochus. The composition masterfully combines elements of the Late Byzantine tradition with the aesthetics of the Italian Renaissance, a characteristic feature of the Cretan-Venetian school. Stylistic features, particularly the modeling of the figures and the use of color, suggest an attribution to Permeniates or his workshop. Analysis of the work indicates a likely creation date around 1523, a period when the artist was active in Venice. His painting technique demonstrates a refined fusion of Eastern and Western artistic elements, establishing him as a significant representative of the Cretan school.
