HAGIOGRAPHISCHES PROSKYNETARION (MONUMENTALE PILGERIKONE) Jerusalem, datiert 1914 Öl auf Leinwand, partielle Vergoldung. 150 x 111 cm (ohne Rahmen. Signiert und datiert 'SOPHIA CHRISTO STEPHANOV 1914'. Achsialsymmetrische Komposition. In der Mitte Darstellung Jerusalems mit der Darstellung der Passion Christi, der Kreuzigung und Kreuzabnahme. Zu beiden Seiten wird das Zentrum flankiert von der Gottesmutter und Christi jeweils in Medaillons gerahmt von Propheten. Entlang des oberen und unteren Randes verschiedene Heiligendarstellungen, Vitaszenen und Begebenheiten aus dem Alten und Neuen Testament mit kirchenslawischen Beischriften. Proskynetaria sind Ikonen auf textilem Bildträger, die in Palästina zwischen dem frühen 18. und dem frühen 20. Jahrhundert als Souvenirs für Pilgerreisende hergestellt wurden. Für die seit dem 18. Jahrhundert dominierende hagiographische Proskynetaria ist die Hauptdarstellung der Heiligen Stadt mit der Grabeskirche und dem Heiligen Grab charakteristisch. Sie tragen in der Regel Inschriften, welche in der jeweiligen Sprache des Pilgers die Reise datiert. Man nimmt an, dass Proskynetaria in Jerusalemer Werkstätten von den dortigen Ikonenmalern das ganze Jahr über und zumeist in Serie hergestellt wurden, um sie zur Osterzeit an Pilger zu verkaufen.
