Further details
HANS ROTTENHAMMER (1564-1625), VENUS & MARS, OIL ON COPPER, DATED AND SIGNED
The present painting, on an impressive copper plate, is a recent addition to the oeuvre of the Bavarian painter Hans Rottenhammer (1564-1625). Dated 1613, this composition belongs to the master's late works, when he was working in Augsburg on various commissions for important patrons such as Count Ernest of Schaumburg (1569-1622) and Duke Maximilian of Bavaria (1573-1651). The subject is taken from the Metamorphoses (IV, 167-189) by Ovid (43 BC-17 or 18 AD). It tells the story of how Vulcan, having discovered the adultery of his wife Venus with Mars, traps them. In this painting, the focus is on the two lovers before they are discovered by Vulcan. This choice gives greater importance to the symbolism of the act of seduction of Mars by Venus, the goddess of love, which, according to Ovid, helps to establish a lasting peace. In the context of the Wars of Religion, this metaphor was particularly relevant.
