Lot 1054 | Hasenpflug, Carl Georg Adolph
Hasenpflug, Carl Georg Adolph - Berlin 1802 - Halberstadt 1858 - In the cloister of Walkenried monastery. Oil/canvas, signed and dated 1837 lower left. - Carl Hasenpflug entered the workshop of the Berlin theater painter Carl Gropius in 1820 and in the same year received a grant from the Prussian king to attend the Berlin Academy, where Johann Erdmann Hummel became his most important teacher. Through his instruction in perspective and optics, Hasenpflug laid the basis for his sovereign representation of architecture, which was to become decisive for the artist's entire oeuvre. As often in his works, the artist directs the viewer's gaze from the dark architecture of the foreground to a natural space in the background that is brightly lit by the sun. With this strong contrast between the light background and the shadowy cross ribs, arches and scattered rubble stones and crumbling plaster as a sign of decay and abandonment, Hasenpflug increases the effect of the picture enormously. At the time the painting was created, Walkenried was in poor condition, the monastery church had been used as a quarry for almost 150 years, and demolition was forbidden in 1817. From 1876 renovation work took place in the cloister and the enclosure.
