Douglas Kirkland (b.1934, photographer).

Stephen Hawking. 1 March 1983.

355 x 278mm. Colour portrait photograph, Kodak processing stamp on verso with date May 1983. Provenance: the estate of Professor Stephen Hawking.

Hawking and the equations. The equations on the blackboard behind Hawking relate to a special unitary group of degree 3 and the standard model of particle physics. 1983 was the year in which Hawking first approached Simon Mitton of Cambridge University Press with the idea for what was to become A Brief History of Time; his theoretical work during this year included the proposition (with Jim Hartle) of the Hartle-Hawking state concerning the very early state of the universe.
