Lot 47 | Hawking suggests wormholes may exist
Estimate value
£ 2 000 – 3 000
Stephen Hawking (1942-2018) and Don N. Page (b.1948).

‘Spectrum of Wormholes.’ Offprint from: Physical Review D, Vol. 42, No. 8, pp.2655-2663. [Brookhaven, NY: The American Physical Society,] 15 October 1990.

First quantum mechanical analysis of wormholes. The authors solve the Wheeler-De-Witt equation with 'appropriate boundary conditions’ and find a discrete spectrum of solutions. This suggests (but does not prove) that wormholes may exist in nature.

Quarto (285 x 210mm). Stapled self-wrappers (punch holes, insignificant faint marginal mark on first page). Provenance: the estate of Professor Stephen Hawking.
