Lot 39 | Hawking’s most important article, predicting Hawking Radiation
Estimate value
£ 4 000 – 6 000
Stephen Hawking (1942-2018).

‘Black Hole Explosions?’ Offprint from: Nature, Vol. 248, No. 5443, pp.30-31. [London:] 1 March 1974.

First edition, offprint issue, of Hawking’s most important article, predicting black holes would release blackbody radiation, now known as Hawking Radiation. This paper shows that very low mass (primordial) black holes (with a mass less than 1015kg) would evaporate (and explode) on a timescale shorter than the age of the Universe. If primordial black holes were formed in the early Universe these explosions could, in principle, be detected observationally.

Quarto (280 x 212mm), single leaf (punch holes). Provenance: the estate of Professor Stephen Hawking.
