Heinrich Friedrich Füger studierte in Ludwigsburg und Leipzig. Während eines Aufenthalts in Dresden konnte er die Kunst der englischen Porträtmalerei studieren. 1774 kam der Künstler nach Wien, wo er sich vor allem als Miniaturmaler rasch etablieren konnte. 1776 erhielt er ein kaiserliches Stipendium für einen Aufenthalt in Rom, Füger sollte bis 1783 in Italien weilen. 1781 bekam er von Königin Maria Karolina von Neapel-Sizilien, Erzherzogin von Österreich, seinen bis dahin größten Auftrag: In der Bibliothek des Schlosses Caserta malte er vier Wandgemälde. Der Zyklus wurde von den Zeitgenossen bejubelt, sollte jedoch sein einziger Großauftrag bleiben. Fügers Wiener Schaffen konzentrierte sich auf zwei Bereiche: die Porträtmalerei in Form von Gemälden oder Miniaturen und die Historienmalerei. Noch vor 1800 wandte sich Füger - auch aufgrund eines Augenleidens - fast ausschließlich der Historienmalerei zu. 1791 wurde er Direktor der Wiener Akademie der bildenden Künste, 1806 Direktor der Kaiserlichen Gemäldegalerie im Belvedere.

Das vorliegende Gemälde wurde auf der Wiener Akademieausstellung des Jahres 1813 erstmals präsentiert (Nr. 114 "Thetis wie sie Jupitern um Waffen für ihren Sohn Achilles bittet"). Joseph von Hormayr beschrieb es im Jahre 1821 wie folgt: "Jupiter schaut auf die kniende Thetis von seinem Wolkenthrone herab an, die mit einer Hand sein Knie, der anderen sein Kinn berührt, um Waffenglück für ihren Sohn Achill zu erschmeicheln. Die herrlichen Köpfe sind auch in den Heften des lithographischen Instituts." (zitiert nach R. Keil, s. u., S. 386).

In der Literatur (R. Keil, s. u., WVZ-Nr. 540) wird eine 1808 datierte Entwurfszeichnung für das Gemälde erwähnt (ehemals Slg. Perger, Baden, mit Abb.). Füger fertigte zudem eine Radierung nach diesem Thema (Andresen 1864, Nr. 6).

Robert Keil (s. u., S. 110 ff.) verweist auf die ungewöhnlich deutliche Einbeziehung erotischer Aspekte bei der Gestaltung des vorliegenden Gemäldes. Nacktheit und Körperkontakt einerseits, andererseits der symbolische Gegensatz der knienden Frau zum thronenden Mann. Eine offenbar international anzutreffende Tendenz der Historienmalerei, denn 1811 schuf Jean-Dominique Ingres sein Gemälde "Jupiter und Thetis", das Fügers Komposition sehr nahesteht (Aix-en-Provence, Musée Granet).
