Tall, black lacquered leather skull with square front peak, the fittings of non-ferrous metal (with traces of gold-plating) and white metal. Rear spine, cruciform base with four domed rivets of nickel silver (U-nuts) and smooth, detachable spike. Held by cotter pins a fine, gold-plated front plate in the form of a double-headed eagle bearing the crowned coat of arms of Schleswig-Holsteins on its chest. Convex leather-lined chin scales on geometrical bosses and long screws, the right side with the state cockade of stiff lacquered leather, the left with the leather national cockade. Well preserved, dark brown leather flap lining. Partially slightly damaged, signs of use and age. Rarely worn early helmet in good original condition.
In autumn 1848, the German double-headed eagle combined with the Schleswig-Holstein coat of arms became mandatory for all Schleswig-Holstein units allied with Prussia. As cockades the blue-white-red for Schleswig-Holstein and the black-red-gold of the confederation were used.
