Helmut Zimmermann wurde 1924 in der nordböhmischen Stadt Aussig geboren. Seine künstlerische Laufbahn begann er 1946 mit einem Studium der Malerei und einem Semester Bildhauerei an der Münchner Kunstakademie, wo er bis 1951 blieb. Hier stand vor allem der Akt im Vordergrund seines Schaffens. Im Jahr 1950 reiste der Künstler durch Westeuropa und Nordafrika. Seine bunten "Bewegungsbilder" spiegeln die unmittelbaren Eindrücke dieser Zeit wider. Während eines Italienaufenthalts in Castello dIschia in den 50er Jahren lösten sich die Bewegungsstudien Zimmermanns vom Figürlichen. Seine Gemälde gingen in zunehmend abstrakte Improvisationen aus Farbflecken und Punkten über, ganz im Sinne einer tachistischen Kunstauffassung (aus dem Französischen tachisme = Fleckwerk). Die Werke Zimmermanns entstanden oft über einen längeren Zeitraum, in einer Art meditativem Zustand. Ende der 50er Jahre wird eine Vertikalstruktur in den Bildkompositionen Zimmermanns sichtbar, die für den Maler eine psychologische Sprache darstellt. Für Helmut Zimmermann war der Malprozess eine Art philosophische Reflexion. Nach einem Aufenthalt in New York und einer drastischen Reduzierung von Formen und Farben in seinen Werken, schien ein Endpunkt in der Malerei für Zimmermann erreicht und er führte ab 1974 den Film in sein Ouvre ein. In dieser Werkgruppe, den "Malfilmen", dokumentierte Helmut Zimmermann den Entstehungsprozess und alle Stadien einzelner Gemälde, die im Endprodukt meist unsichtbar waren. Als filmische Sequenz aneinandergereihter Einzelbilder wurde ein Bewegungsablauf in die Malerei Zimmermanns reintegriert. In der traditionellen Kalligraphie fand Zimmermann auf einer Japanreise 1982 die absolute Verbindung von Bewegung und Form als spiritueller Übung, die sich produktiv auf sein Schaffen auswirkte. Ab 1988 lebte Helmut Zimmermann in Passau und produzierte meist serielle Arbeiten wie seine "Drehbilder", bei denen Zufall und Bewegung über das Endergebnis entschieden. Im Jahr 2009 eröffnete eine große Retrospektive zu Ehren des Künstlers im Neuen Stadtmuseum Landsberg am Lech. Helmut Zimmermann verstarb 2015 in Passau. Sein Gesamtwerk reflektiert künstlerisch einen spirituellen Entwicklungsprozess, ohne dabei in einer tradierten Symbolik verhaftet zu sein, sondern indem er zu einer eigenen Formensprache fand.
