Lot 42 | Heraldry of the City of Paris
Estimate value
$ 8 000 – 12 000
Calligraphic manuscript title, 4 double-leaves, and 89 leaves, 408 x 269mm; three or four hand-colored engraved arms and heraldic devices mounted on most leaves, with running titles and page numbers in manuscript; 14-page “Table des prevosts, des marchands de la ville de Paris” in manuscript at end (browning and spotting; wormholes on a few leaves). Contemporary red morocco, boards and spine tooled in gilt, armorial device of the city of Paris in gilt in center (light wear to spine and edges). Provenance: hand-colored arms identified as “de Cerisy” in pencil on leaf before title – Unidentified 19th-century bookplate.
Handsome album of engraved hand-colored heraldic devices of royal officials in the city of Paris, compiled by Jean-Louis Chevillard, a heraldic artist. The work appears to include material from previously published works, clipped and pasted into this album, with additional captions in manuscript. Published works by Chevillard, however, are exceedingly rare on WorldCat, and Cohen-De Ricci only records one: Dictionnaire héraldique contentant les armes et blasons des princes, prélats, grands officiers de la Couronne et de la Maison du Roy… (Paris, 1723). The Morgan Library holds an album by Chevillard with the same title, evidently made for Guillaume Claude Delaleu (1712-1774), a Parisian notary, and comprising 248 armorial etchings mounted on 70 leaves. See Cohen-De Ricci 234 (for 1723 work by Chevillard).
