"Auf Block Kniender mit erhobenen Armen (Kniender verlorener Sohn)". Originaltitel Bronze mit fein nuancierter brauner Patina, 1933. Monogr. "Bl"; Gießerstempel "GUSS. BARTH BLN."; Schöner Guss vor 1970 aus einer auf 15 unnummerierte Exemplare beschränkten Auflage in Bronze, die ausschließlich posthum erfolgte. Wvz. Isermeyer F 38. In dieser formal auf das Wesentliche reduzierten Bronze spiegelt sich das große Talent Blumenthals wieder, dessen Wirkung und Bedeutung als einer der besten deutschen Bildhauer der Moderne, sich durch die NS-Zeit und seinen frühen Tod nicht mehr entfalten konnte. Der ausgebildete Steinmetz studierte 1925-1931 an den Vereinigten Staatsschulen für Freie und Angewandte Kunst in Berlin, ab 1927 bei Edwin Scharff, dessen Meisterschüler er wurde. 1928 debütierte Blumenthal in der Preußischen Akademie der Künste, 1930 erhielt er den "Großen Staatspreis" verbunden mit einem Stipendium für die Villa Massimo in Rom 1931/32. Unter dem Eindruck antiker Kunst der Vorklassik fand er zu einem formal beruhigten, zeitlosen, unpathetischen Menschenbild, vergleichbar mit Gerhard Marcks. Blumenthal schrieb 1935, was ihm vorschwebe: "Eine große einfache Form, alles soll natürlich und ruhig aussehen". Seine Figuren voll weihevoller Ruhe und Strenge tragen in ihren bewegungsarmen Posen keine individuellen Züge, die Blicke gehen in eine unbestimmte Ferne. In einer größeren Werkreihe von Plastiken variierte Blumenthal das Motiv kniender männlicher und weiblicher Aktfiguren, teilw. auch mit erhobenen Armen und als Torso. Wie andere Werke Blumenthals scheint auch auch der vorliegende Kniende der Realität entrückt zu sein. Mit seinem völlig unbekleideten Körper und den sich ergebend erhobenen Armen kann er als überzeitliche Symbolfigur für Wehrlosigkeit und Verletzlichkeit interpretiert werden. Hierdurch bewahrt die Figur eine über die NS-Zeit bis heute reichende Aktualität. Seit Ende 1934 arbeitete er in der Ateliergemeinschaft Klosterstraße in Berlin neben Bildhauern mit individuellem Kunstverständnis wie Ludwig Kasper und Gerhard Marcks. 1936 hatte Blumenthal seine erste Einzelausstellung in der Galerie von Karl Buchholz in Berlin; 1937 wurden Werke Blumenthals aus dem Folkwang-Museum in Essen und aus der Ausstellung "Junge Bildhauerkunst" in der Galerie Buchholz jedoch von den Nationalsozialisten als "entartet" entfernt. Anderseits erhielt er von Oktober 1936 bis Juni 1937 ein Stipendium für einen zweiten Aufenthalt in der Villa Massimo, verlängert um ein Villa-Romana-Stipendium in Florenz bis Oktober 1937. In dieser Zeit entstanden mehrere Hauptwerke. H. 63 cm.
