HEWITSON, William Chapman (1806-1878)

Illustrations of new species of exotic butterflies. London: John van Voorst, [1856-] 1876 [-1877].

A vast and richly illustrated work on non-European butterflies from the collections of Hewitson himself and William Wilson Saunders (1809-1879). Hewitson dedicated the last thirty years of his life to this book, at great personal expense, personally drawing on stone and colouring the figures. When he died, he left his entire collection of butterflies to the British Museum. BM(NH) II, p.839; Nissen ZBI 1930.

Five volumes, quarto (280 x 220mm). 300 hand-coloured lithographic plates (a clean copy, occasional very faint spotting, plate ‘Erycinidae. Calydna II’ in vol. V with repaired corner). Modern green half morocco, preserving moiré fine-ribbed green cloth and original endpapers, lettered in gilt to upper covers, top hedges gilt. Provenance: W.N. Pitcher & Co. (bookseller’s ticket) – Bolton Public Libraries (stamp on titles).
