Hieronymus Harder war von 1561 bis 1571 Lehrer an der Lateinschule in Geislingen, danach bis 1578 in Überkingen. In der Umgebung von Geislingen sammelte er mit Leidenschaft einheimische Pflanzen und hat im Laufe seines Lebens Herbarien angelegt, deren dokumentarischer Wert für die Botanik nicht zu unterschätzen ist. Ursprünglich botanisierte Harder, um seine eigenen Kenntnis über die ihn umgebende Flora zu erweitern. Als er in Überkingen Lehrer geworden war, bot er - mangels Besoldung - den dortigen Badegästen seine Herbarien zum Kauf an. Es ist überliefert, dass u. a. Herzog Albrecht V. von Bayern, der 1574 und 1576 in Überkingen kurte, zwei Herbarien Harders erworben hat.

Da eine Systematik der Pflanzen zu Harders Zeit noch unbekannt war, wurden die Pflanzen nach dem Jahreslauf in die Herbarien eingeklebt. Jene Teile von Pflanzen, die sich nicht pressen ließen (z. B. Wurzeln und Früchte) wurden nach der Natur - gezeichnet und koloriert - ergänzt. Lediglich das erste, hier vorliegende Herbarium, das ausschließlich in und um Geislingen entstand, ist mit deutschen Bezeichnungen versehen. Später verwendete Harder die üblichen lateinischen Bezeichnungen.

"Dise blum kummpt, alle jar im Februario herfür [...]": So beginnt Hieronymus Harder den Text seines Herbariums. Bei dieser Blume handelt es sich um die sog. Hornungsblume, das Schneeglöckchen, die als erste in der noch winterlichen Natur erblüht. Nicht ohne Grund datierte Harder somit den Beginn der vorliegenden Sammlung auf den 4. Februar 1562.

Beim vorliegenden Band handelt es sich um die älteste der Harderschen Pflanzensammlungen. Man geht heute von 12 solcher Sammlungen aus, die sich u. a. in der Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana (Sign. Pal. Lat. 1276 (Erbario dello Harder), der Bibliothek des Deutschen Museums in München, der Bayerischen Staatsbibliothek in München (Sign. Cod. icon. 3) und in der Wiener Nationalbibliothek (Sign. Cod. 11128) befinden. Ausgerechnet das erste der Herbarien Harders befindet sich bis heute in Privatbesitz.
