At the end of each "alternative" section the player should follow the arrow that leads to the "obbligato" section, which should be played until the next "junction"...'.
Permutaciones is Paredes's first experiment in combining 'open' and 'closed' forms: i.e. music determined partly by the composer and partly at the choice of the performer. The technique mirrors that of the Argentinian writer Julio Cortázar, whose 'Poesia Permutante' comprise poems made up of four-line stanzas which can be read in any order. Permutaciones was first performed by Hisako Tokue at the Guildhall Contemporary Music Festival in May 1986, and was published by University of York Music Press in 1985. Although she has lived in London since the age of 21, Paredes continues to be involved in the musical life of her native Mexico as a teacher, radio producer and arranger.
