Albert Einstein (1879-1955).

Typed letter signed (‘A. Einstein’) to Hugo Bergmann, 112 Mercer Street, Princeton, 19 June 1936.

In German. Half page, 277 x 215mm (paper clip stain to upper left). Provenance: by descent from Hugo Bergmann.

‘His American Holiness …’. Einstein writes a letter of introduction for a close friend, Rabbi Julius Silberfeld of Newark, New Jersey, whom he jokingly describes as ‘His American Holiness’: ‘At home he is in every way knowledgeable, but not in Palestine. It would be kind of you if you would give him a few hints so that he can find his way there’.

The recipient, Hugo Bergmann, was the first rector of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, between 1935 and 1938.
