In German. Half page, 277 x 215mm (paper clip stain to upper left). Provenance: by descent from Hugo Bergmann.
‘His American Holiness …’. Einstein writes a letter of introduction for a close friend, Rabbi Julius Silberfeld of Newark, New Jersey, whom he jokingly describes as ‘His American Holiness’: ‘At home he is in every way knowledgeable, but not in Palestine. It would be kind of you if you would give him a few hints so that he can find his way there’.
The recipient, Hugo Bergmann, was the first rector of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, between 1935 and 1938.
