Estimate value
€ 500 – 600
Origin: Presumably England.
Date: Ca. 1850.
Material: 585/- yellow gold, tested.
Total Weight: ca. 36,0 g.
Measurement: Length necklace 41,0 cm, Earring length 7,4 cm.
Gemstones: Lots of tiny to small seed pearls Ø ca. 0,6 - 3,5 mm, mother-of-pearl elements.
Description: Victorian seed pearl sets were typically worn on festive occasions: they were often worn at weddings or given to young women as a special gift on their 18th birthday. Tiny seed pearls were artfully strung onto mother-of-pearl and secured with fine horsehair in a process of exquisite craftsmanship. The pearl itself was considered a symbol of purity and virginity.
The proceeds will go to a charitable foundation.
Condition: In good overall condition for its age. A small strand of seed pearls at the
clasp of the necklace is broken. Both earrings are broken at the mother-of-pearl settings.
The seed pearls show impurities in a few places. The bottom pearl of the necklace shows
traces of glue, probably from a later repair attempt. The gold is heavily oxidised in some
places.
