The Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres, founded in 1663, is a French learned society devoted to the humanities and one of the five academies of the Institut de France. According to its charter, it is primarily concerned with the study of the monuments, documents, languages, and cultures of the civilizations of antiquity, the Middle Ages, and the classical period around the world. Three volumes, octavo (168 x 106mm). Engraved frontispiece by Jean Daullé after Antoine Coypel; engraved title vignettes, head- and tail-pieces (edges lightly browned). Contemporary French red morocco gilt, all edges gilt, silk ribbon bookmark, with the arms of the Count of Maurepas on covers. Provenance: Jean-Frédéric Phélypeaux, 1st Count of Maurepas (1701-1781; binding).
