McKENNEY, Thomas L. (1785–1859); HALL, James (1793–1868). History of the Indian Tribes of North America. Philadelphia: D. Rice and A.N. Hart, 1855.

Hand-colored octavo edition, in publisher's deluxe binding. The illustrations are reduced from the folio edition of 1836–44, which Howes described as “the most colorful portraits of Indians ever executed.” They are based on Charles Bird King’s portraits in the Indian Gallery of the Department of War in D.C., which were nearly all destroyed in the 1865 Smithsonian fire. The octavo edition contained an additional plate of “Red Bird”, used as the frontispiece to vol. 2, as well as additions to the biographies. The first octavo edition was published in 1850. Howes M-129; Sabin 43411 (described as a later issue of the 1850 first edition).

Three volumes, octavo (265 × 175mm). 120 hand-colored lithographs by J.T. Bowen, most after Charles Bird King, with tissue guards (toning, occasional spotting including to some plates, occasional light stains). Original red pebbled sheepskin, covers and spine tooled in gold, dentelles in gold on turn-ins, edges gilt (vol. 3 rebacked, vols. 1 & 2 joints just starting, rubbed at extremities, light soiling). Provenance: Martha P. Shoemaker (gift inscription from her father dated 8 August 1881).
