Auf goldenem Hintergrund feingemalte und ikonographisch sehr interessante russische Ikone, Ende 19. Jahrhundert, mit folgender Inschrift: Das Abbild von Josaphat Zarewitsch gemalt nach einer Zeichnung, die sich in dem Antikenmuseum der Akademie der Bildenden Künste befindet.

Der heiligen Barlaam war vermutlich ein Priester und Einsiedler im heutigen Südsudan. Er bekehrte Josaphat, einen indischen Königssohn, zum Christentum. Der heiligen Johannes von Damaskus hat ihr Heiligenleben aufgezeichnet. Um 1000 entstand ein byzantinischer Roman zu diesen beiden Heiligen, welcher weite Verbreitung fand und sich auch in der Kunst niederschlug.

Below is the following inscription: The image of Tsarevich Josaphat based on a drawing that is in the museum of Antiquities of the Academy of Fine Arts.
St. Barlaam was probably a priest and hermit in South Sudan. He converted Josaphat, an Indian king’s son, to Christianity. St. John of Damscus recorded their lives as saints. Around 1000, a Byzantine novel about these two saints was written, which was widely distributed and also found expression in art.
