A RUSSIAN ICON ON MOTHER-OF-PEARL SHOWING ST. NICHOLAS IN AN ELABORATELY CRAFTED SILVER KIOT WITH MONOGRAM OF THE LAST TSAR COUPLE NICHOLAS II. AND ALEXANDRA, icon with silver oklad and Cloisonne-Enamel: St. Petersburg (?) 1896-1908, master's mark: 'A.K', 9 x 7,5 cm; Kiot: St. Petersburg 1896-1908, master's mark: 'OC', 18 x 16,5 x 4 cm. // The icon has the following dedication on the back: 'For Niki from Malya. 6.5. 1898'. This day was the birthday of Nicholas II (Julian calendar). In 1898 he was 30 years old. The blessing on the back of the kiot: "God protect the tsar" and the monograms of the tsar couple suggest that with "Niki" Tsar Nicholas II. is meant. In the Tsar's surroundings there was only one person whom he called "Malya", the Russian primary ballerina Matilda Felixowna Kshessinskaja. She had an affair with him, in which he probably also lost his virginity. Obviously, the icon was later inserted in the kiot. The stone in the kiot below could be a polished bone piece of St. Nicholas of Myra. Provenance: Danish private property.
