In Passepartout und schmalem klassizistischen Rahmen aus vergoldetem Holz (bestoßen), hinter Glas. Auf dem Verso zahlreiche Provenienz-Etiketten, darunter zwei von Christie's und Dorotheum. Gesamtmaße 46 x 32 cm.
Honoré Daumier (1808 - 1879) war ein französischer Maler, Bildhauer und Karikaturist. Berühmtheit erlangte er vor allem durch seine bildmächtigen politischen und sozialkritischen Karikaturen. Diese spielten eine zentrale Rolle in den satirischen Pariser Zeitschriften "La Caricature" und "Le Charivari". Daumiers Karikaturen stellen einen bemerkenswerten Zusammenhang zwischen dem Bürgertum und antiker Kultur bzw. Philosophie her, am liebsten mokierte er sich dabei über das französische Kleinbürgertum. Für einen seiner Witze über König Louis Philippe I. wurde Daumier 1832 für sechs Monate ins Gefängnis eingewiesen. Er starb verarmt und erblindet.
