NOTE:
Huang Dufeng, whose given name was Shan, also known by the studio names Rongyuan and Wuling Laoren, was a native of Jieyang, Guangdong. He was a disciple of the Studio of Zhang Daqian and one of the prominent figures of the Lingnan School of Painting. Proficient in Chinese painting and skilled in calligraphy, Huang’s style blended elements from both the Northern and Southern schools and various classical traditions, creating a distinctive approach. In his work, he sought to transcend the established theoretical framework of the Lingnan School by drawing upon the expressive qualities and depth of literati painting to forge a new style and fresh ink technique.

2. LIN KAI

NOTE:
Lin Kai, a native of Fuzhou, Fujian, was a prominent Chinese painter, calligrapher, poet, and seal engraver. He graduated from the National Academy of Art (now the China Academy of Art) in 1950. Throughout his life, Lin dedicated himself to achieving mastery in poetry, calligraphy, painting, and seal engraving. He created numerous landscape paintings, drawing inspiration from real scenery, characterized by grand compositions and profound artistic vision. His calligraphy is notable for its distinctive line work, while his seal engravings demonstrate a variety of styles without sacrificing traditional structure. Lin produced an impressive volume of poetry, calligraphy, paintings, and seal engravings, many of which were published in newspapers and magazines. He held solo exhibitions and participated in various exhibitions both domestically and internationally.

3. QIN LINGYUN

NOTE:
Qin Lingyun was a renowned Chinese painter and educator from Henan province. He also went by the name Weixin, and his studio names included ‘Wugua Caotang’ and ‘Wenji Lou’. Growing up in an artisan family, Qin developed a deep interest in traditional art forms from an early age and successfully enrolled in the Painting Department of the National School of Fine Arts in Beiping in 1934. He devoted himself to studying both classical and contemporary painting theories and works, with a particular focus on landscape painting from the Song Dynasty as well as religious art. Qin left behind an extensive collection of landscape paintings. He was not only an accomplished landscape painter but also a diligent curator and promoter of China’s artistic heritage.

4. CHEN XIONGLI (B. 1939)

NOTE:
Chen Xiongli was born in Beijing and specializes in expressive bird-and-flower painting, as well as landscape and figure painting. He is particularly renowned for his ink wash paintings of deer, which earn him the title of ‘the foremost artist in ink wash deer painting’. In 1956, he joined the Beijing Chinese Painting Research Association, which was founded under the advocacy of Premier Zhou Enlai, and later lbecame a disciple of the esteemed painter Li Kuchan.

5. HUANG YONGHOU (1928-2018)

NOTE:
Huang Yonghou, a native of Hunan, graduated from the Painting Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts. He was a member of the China Artists Association and was also the younger brother of renowned painter Huang Yongyu. Huang was skilled in traditional Chinese painting, his turbulent life experiences deepened his love for life and contributed to his distinctive artistic style.

6. DAI LIN (B. 1914)

NOTE:
Dai Lin is a renowned painter, calligrapher, and art educator from Shenzhou, Hebei. He graduated from Beiping North China Art Academy in 1936 and starting in 1958, he held professorships in the Fine Arts Departments of Beijing Art Academy, Beijing Normal College, and Capital Normal University. Dai excels in expressive bird-and-flower painting, calligraphy, and seal carving. His works honor traditional techniques while introducing fresh innovation, with a particular emphasis on the skillful use of brushwork and color.
