Les Misérables. Translated by Lascelles Wraxall. London: Hurst and Blackett, 1862.

First authorized edition in English of one of the great novels of the 19th century, published just six months after the original edition in French. Hugo described his masterwork as ‘a progress from evil to good, from injustice to justice, from falsehood to truth, from night to day, from appetite to conscience, from corruption to life; from bestiality to duty, from hell to heaven, from nothingness to God’.



3 volumes, octavo (182 x 115mm). Half-titles (tear into a few words at corner of 5.5 in vol. I, another in blank gutter, some finger-soiling and staining, a few spots). Contemporary red half leather over pebbled cloth (lightly marked, 2 chips towards head of spine of vol. I). Provenance: Mrs Hearn, 1 Kensington Park Gardens (inscriptions on half-titles dated 16th June 1865).
