A RARE ICON SHOWING 'IN THEE REJOICES' Russian, circa 1600 Tempera on wood panel with double kovcheg. The shown subject deriving from a hymn attributed to St. John of Damascus and not an actual event, representing in a circular glory the Mother of God enthroned holding the Christ Child, the latter extending both his hands in blessing, surrounded by angels, against a Church and the Garden of Paradise. Two groups of saints depicted in the lower part, St. John Damaskenos prominently portrayed near the throne of the Mother of God, displaying his open scroll, the composition painted in detail, mostly with tones of green, brown and red. Two selecte saints on the borders. The border stripped to gesso, minimally restored. 30 x 26.7 cm.
IKONE MIT DER GOTTESMUTTER 'ÜBER DICH FREUET SICH DIE GANZE SCHÖPFUNG' Russland, um 1600 Einzeltafel mit zwei Rückseiten-Sponki (einer verloren). Doppeltes Kowtscheg, Eitempera auf Kreidegrund, partielle Vergoldung. 30 x 26,7 cm. Zwei Randheilige. Achsialsymmetrischer Bildaufbau in zwei horizontale Register. Mittig thront im oberen Bereich die auf einem Thron sitzende Gottesmutter mit dem segnenden Christusknaben in ihrem Schoß umringt von Erzengeln. Im Hintergrund erscheint eine Kathedralarchitektur mit Zwiebeltürmen. Der obere Teil wird von einer Aureole mit Pflanzenbewuchs umschlossen. Im unteren Bereich Darstellung von in zwei Reihen angeordneter Heiliger, darunter Johannes von Damaskus mit einer geöffneten Schriftrolle, Johannes der Täufer, Elija, Mose, David, Kirchenväter und Asketen. Der Hymnus aus der Basilius-Liturgie feiert Maria als Freude der ganzen Schöpfung und preist sie als geheiligten Tempel und geistiges Paradies. Gott, der in ihr Fleisch annahm und ein Kind wurde, machte ihren Schoß zu seinem Thron. Umgeben wird sie von der Aureole des Kosmos. Um sie hat sich die ganze Kirche versammelt, die Chöre der Engel, Apostel, Bischöfe, Könige und Mönche sowie Männer und Frauen aller Schichten. Farbe des Randes abgenommen, min. rest.
