AN ICON OF THE SHUI-SMOLENSKAYA MOTHER OF GOD Russian, 19th century Tempera on wood panel. The haloes made of silver, covered by a golden lacquer. The prototype of this icon was ordered painted during the 1654-55 plague epidemic, and is said to have delivered the inhabitants of Shui from the plague. Minimally restored. 31.3 x 26.2 cm.

Eitempera auf Kreidegrund, versilberte Nimben goldfarben lasiert. 31,3 x 26,2 cm. Bildfüllende Darstellung der Gottesmutter mit dem Christuskind. Maria hält das Jesuskind, das nach seinem nach oben gezogenen Fuß greift, auf ihrem linken Arm. Dieser Gestus weist auf die Schmerzen hin, die durch die Nägel der Passion zugefügt werden. Mit ihrem rechten Arm streichelt Maria zärtlich den anderen Fuß des Kindes. Dieses Motiv ist eine Variante der Gottesmutter Glykophilousa, das im 17. Jahrhundert auf Anordnung des Zaren als wundertätig anerkannt wurde. Die Gewandsäume sind partiell graviert. Punktuelle Einstimmungen.
